The U.S.-Mexico border continues to witness near-record highs in monthly encounters between U.S. Border Patrol agents and migrants attempting to cross into the United States, according to the latest government statistics. The surge in migrant crossings has emerged as a significant topic of discussion during recent meetings between U.S. President Joe Biden and Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
After a temporary decline due to the COVID-19 pandemic, migrant encounters at the U.S.-Mexico border have skyrocketed. In November 2022, a staggering 206,239 encounters were reported, exceeding the peak reached during the previous wave of migration in May 2019 and matching the level seen in March 2000. The surge in unauthorized border crossings poses significant challenges for border security and immigration management.
While the majority of encounters had involved migrants from Mexico and Northern Triangle countries in the initial stages of the pandemic, the origin countries have now diversified. In November 2022, about 63% of the migrants encountered at the border were from countries other than Mexico and the Northern Triangle region. Notably, there have been substantial increases in encounters with individuals from Colombia, Cuba, Nicaragua, Peru, and Venezuela.

The demographic profile of those attempting to cross the border has also evolved. Single adults have accounted for the majority of recent encounters, representing 70% of the total in November 2022. However, there has been a significant rise in encounters involving families, now comprising 24% of the total, and unaccompanied minors at 6%.

As the 1776 United Coalition closely monitors the escalating situation, the organization emphasizes the need for effective border security measures and immigration policies that prioritize the safety and well-being of American citizens. Addressing the surging migrant encounters requires comprehensive strategies that balance humanitarian concerns with national security interests.
